Scholarships

The Montana State University Foundation receives and holds charitable gifts made to support scholarships. Some scholarship gifts create an endowment and perpetuate the award. Other scholarship gifts are available in their entirety to support a current award or are pledged by the donor on a recurring annual basis.
.
Recipient Selection
Depending on the scholarship or donor requirement, recipients are selected by the University Student Financial Aid Committee, a College or Department Scholarship Committee, or Program or other Special Committee established for that purpose.
The donor, family members or appointees may not actively participate in the selection process. However, the recipient's information may be shared with the donor, family members or appointees to the extent allowed by law.
..
Selection Criteria
In awarding unrestricted scholarships (e.g. scholarships that are not restricted by curriculum, student status, demonstrated financial need, residency or citizenship) academic achievement, financial need, or a combination of the two are the primary evaluating factors. This allows the university to meet the needs of students as they change.
A donor may specify other requirements as long as those requirements do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, ethnic background or gender. Other requirements can further the educational opportunity of certain protected classes of citizens and encourage women, member or not of a protected class, in a non-traditional area.
..
Financial Need As A Stated Criterion
If financial need is a stated criterion, need is determined according to the formula required for participation in federal and state financial aid programs. The student must apply and qualify for financial assistance and the total financial assistance (from all sources) the student receives may not exceed the difference between the cost of education and the expected family contribution. Furthermore, if the recipient of the non-financial need scholarship is receiving other need-based assistance, the value of the scholarship is included as part of the total.
..
Disbursing Award
Scholarships are disbursed through the university office of financial aid services as required by Regents' policy. The annual award is normally disbursed in equal installments and applied toward the cost of tuition and fees. Any amount more than fees due is paid to the recipient.
